A Digestive of *The Art of Learning* by Josh Waitzkin
A Digestive of The Art of Learning by Josh Waitzkin
A Brief Synopsis
Josh Waitzkin, a decorated martial artist and child chess prodigy, boils down the esoteric topic of ‘learning’ he slowly uncovered from a lifetime of competition. Things like loving the game, making smaller circles of tough-to-chew concepts, and building a trigger that puts you into the zone.
Should you read this?
It’s a fairly quick read so there’s little wasted cost. I initially read this to improve my ability to condense and act on the unbearable wave of information shown to us during a brazilian jiu-jitsu practice. I don’t think I accomplished that goal outright. Instead I did came out with a much better appreciation of the humanity behind learning. At the highest level, there’s still no magic sauce. Josh applies the tried and true learning techniques we all subconsciously understand, but at a disciplined angle. Reinforcing that I am as capable as Josh is of learning was incredibly valuable. So, I think yes, you should read this.
Exploring ‘Build Your Trigger’
This is one of the learning techniques Josh explores in his book. It particularly resonated with me as I spent the last year or so working through anxiety, how my anxiety is triggered, and the effects anxiety has on my life. Triggering a learning mindset is not all that different. Sometimes a song, an exercise, or a pep talk can knock you into a mood that increases your capability ten fold. In his book, Josh talks about splashing his face with cold water or doing sprints during a particularly grueling chess match. He also tells us a story of a friend who he encourages to listen to a particular song (among other things) to get himself into the mindset of success. If I can break down my anxiety triggers and apply technique to stop them, surely I can do the same to trigger a sense of calm and invigoration to learn.
Conclusion
‘The Art of Learning’ was more impactful than I initially gave it credit for. As I refelct on the reading, I noticed just how much it reinforced my love for learning and gave me a deep appreciation for the talented folks I’ve met through Scratchpad. Josh’s writing puts into perspective how elite learning is all about having fun and taking control of your emotions, instead of letting your emotions take you for a ride.
